Licence Applications




The Broadcasting Authority regulates all broadcasting content on Radio and TV that originates from the Maltese Islands. You can find the list of broadcasting stations here:List of Stations.

Applications for a broadcasting licence  should be sent to the Broadcasting Authority. Application and licence fees are set out in the Fourth Schedule to the Broadcasting Act. If an FM radio application is approved and an appropriate frequency (identified by Malta Communications Authority technicians) is available, a licence document will be issued with the frequency that will be used.

For a new broadcasting station, arrangements have to be made with the service providers – Melita and GO plc. After the assignment of a new channel by the service providers in their channel line-up, please download an application for a Radio and/or TV Station

Present day infrastructure does not permit the assignment of further FM frequencies and hence new applications for a nationwide radio service cannot be entertained at present.

A community radio station caters for the needs of a particular community or locality, having a limited range of reception. Frequency allocation is through the Malta Communications Authority [https://www.mca.org.mt/authorisations-licensing].

Application for a community radio station is subject to an appropriate frequency being identified by the Malta Communications Authority. Provided that such a frequency is available and provided further that the Broadcasting Authority approves the application, a relevant licence document will be issued.

Digital Radio broadcasting is regulated by Subsidiary Legislation 350.29 here.  The licensed digital radio broadcasting service provider is DigiB Network.

After the assignment of a new channel by the service provider in their channel line-up, apply for a broadcasting licence from the Broadcasting Authority.

Satellite uplink services are licensed by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA). Interested parties are to duly complete and return an Application for a Satellite Earth Station Licence.  Information on the applicable licence fees is contained in Annex 1 of the application form by MCA.

Once the uplink services are approved by the MCA you can apply for a broadcasting licence by the Broadcasting Authority

Own-Broadcast TV Services are licenced in terms of S.L. 350.33, Broadcast Distribution Services Regulations. Such services are only granted to operators of distribution services and would only be available via their own distribution network. Own-Broadcast TV Services can be of a specific genre interalia, cinematographic films, sports, weather and general information and self promotion.
